About Dr. Tejani-Butt

Dr. Tejani-Butt’s research interests include the neurobiological mechanisms associated with the regulation of biogenic amines in an animal model of depressive behavior, implications of these biogenic amines in modulating a stress response, reward and addictive behaviors, as well as in the therapeutic action of drugs used to treat psychiatric disorders.

Dr. Tejani-Butt’s research projects are using an animal model to study the link between stress, depressive behaviors and diminished brain supplies of norepinephrine, dopamine and serotonin. In addition, her lab has been investigating the effects of stress and alcohol consumption on behavioral and central parameters to determine the mechanism by which depressive behavior modulates alcohol dependency.  More recently, Dr. Tejani-Butt has been studying the role of stress in post-traumatic stress disorder and examining sleep disturbances and neural mechanisms that may be implicated in this disorder.

Her lectureship series have coincided with her research interests in central nervous system physiology and pharmacology, endocrine physiology and pharmacology and drug-receptor interactions.  Dr. Tejani-Butt has been a recipient of numerous grants and her research is presently funded by the National Institute of Mental Health.

Dr. Tejani-Butt is a member of several professional organizations, including the Society for Neuroscience. She serves as a Grant Reviewer on the National Institute of Health Experts Grant Study Section, on the Board of Advisors of several boards and the editorial board of Psychiatry Journal.

She received her PhD in pharmaceutical chemistry from the Medical College of Virginia, and her MS in organic chemistry and BS in chemistry and microbiology from the University of Bombay.
