A Family of Pharmacists

In some families, everyone is a doctor or lawyer. In the family of Seldia Zonies Blatman P’37, the family business is pharmacy. And many of those pharmacists got their start at the same place: Philadelphia College of Pharmacy (PCP). Seventeen members of this extended family have earned their degrees at PCP or one of the other four colleges at University of the Sciences.

Setting Up for a Future Off the Court

There are some lessons that are just not taught in the classroom or on the court. For a student-athlete, time management and sacrifice may be near the top of the list.

“Time management plays a big role in everything,” said Kristen Lechner PharmD’12, a senior outside hitter on the volleyball team. “You have to know that when you have a free moment you should look at your notes for class.”

Shining Light on New Prostate Cancer Treatment

Despite advances in detection and treatment, prostate cancer remains the leading cancer and second leading cause of death among men, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Fortunately, advances in the diagnosis have led to early detection of prostate cancer and allowed more men to get treatment. The down side is that the two most conventional therapies— surgery and radiation—come with numerous side effects.

In Memoriam

1951
Donald M. Held P’51 passed away after a long illness on February 5, 2009. His survivors include his wife Lois.

1967
Steven G. Zelenski P’67 (PhD’73, University of Rhode Island; DO’84, Des Moines University) died peacefully at home on April 2, 2009. He was preceded in death by his first wife Jane, his father, and his grandparents. Steve is survived by his wife Tamara, son Alex, daughter Nicki, stepson Joel, and mother Erika.

1985
Elliott S. Herman P’85 lost his battle with bile duct cancer on January 26, 2009. He leaves behind a wife and two daughters.

2000

Melissa Melissa M. Devlin P’00, PharmD’01 married Christopher Devlin on June 6, 2009, in Phoenixville, PA. Dawn (Feltner) Pollitt P’00, PharmD’ 01 was a bridesmaid. The newlyweds honeymooned in Italy and currently reside in New Jersey. (see right)

Holly (Naugle) Eaton MPT’00 and Aaron E. Eaton P’00, PharmD’01 welcomed daughter Avery Sara on November 26, 2008. She joins big sister Allyson (4). Amy (Eaton) Van Kleunen MPT’02 is the proud aunt.

Amy (Reader) Willoughby P’00, PharmD’01 and her husband Steven welcomed daughter Sydney Audrey on March 4, 2009, at 5:23 p.m. Amy is a clinical pharmacist at St. Francis Hospital in Wilmington, DE. She and her family live in Hockessin, DE.

Jessica (Laskowski) Van Nest MOT’01 and Clifford I. Van Nest P’00 welcomed identical twin daughters Brynn Elizabeth and Reese Katherine on October 22, 2008. They join big sister Ava (3). The family lives in Point Pleasant, NJ.

2002

Cole Jaime (Karas) Bayzick MPT’02 (DPT’07, Temple University) her husband Brian announced the birth of son Cole Matthew on July 21, 2009. Jaime works for Genesis Rehab at Fort Washington Estates as a program manager. (see left)

Jennifer (Hinkle) Godshall MPT’02 and her husband Brian announced the birth of son Benjamin Lee on March 19, 2008. He joins big brother Brandon. Jennifer is a physical therapist for Grand View Sports Medicine in Sellersville, PA.

Liam Janelle (Mummert) Hissong MPT’02 and her husband Chad welcomed the birth of son Liam James on April 27, 2008. Liam joins siblings Caleb and Ava. Janelle works on a per diem basis for Staffing Plus, Inc., and Genesis Rehab. She and her family reside in Limerick, PA. (see right)

Charles B. Wardell and Stacy (Buda) Wardell, both PharmD’02, welcomed twins Nathan and Hailey on April 27, 2008. Chuck and Stacy are pharmacists at Wegman’s in Rochester, NY.

2003
Nicole A. Walsh PharmD’03 was elected president of the Lackawanna County Pharmacy Association for a second term. The association delivers presentations to senior centers and on poison prevention to elementary schools and reaches out to the community during pharmacy week.

2004
Larissa M. Gasparato BI’04 received her DO degree from Lake Erie College of Osteopathic Medicine in June 2008. She is currently doing her residency in emergency medicine at Memorial Hospital in York, PA.

Jeffrey M. Phillips PharmD’04 and Sonya Magid were married on February 14, 2009. They just purchased a home in Lansdale, PA.

Alicia (DeNarie) Sadowski MOT’04 and her husband Lamont welcomed the birth of their first child Ava Marie on February 13, 2009. Alicia is a schoolbased occupational therapist in New Jersey, and Lamont is a sales account executive. They live in Berlin, NJ.

Cheryl (Chambers) Soboleski PharmD’04 and her husband Shawn are the parents of Samantha (9), Vanessa (3), and Aaron (1). Cheryl is a pharmacy manager with CVS and is “enjoying the Florida sunshine.”

Danielle M. Villano HS’04 (MS’05, PCOM) and James R. Landzinski PharmD’04 were married in New Jersey on September 5, 2008.

2005
Jessica R. Jablonski PA/HS’05 married Karl A. Swierczek, Jr., on June 19, 2009, in St. John, U.S. Virgin Islands. Amy R. Lamorgia PharmD’06 was in attendance. Jessica and Karl live in Orange County, CA.

Diane (Szymanski) Quinn PharmD’05 and Robert F. Quinn P’94 welcomed the birth of their third child Nora Frances on Jan. 28, 2009. She joins big brothers Aidan (3) and Ryan (2). Diane works for CVS, and Robert works for Astra- Zeneca Pharmaceuticals. They live in West Chester, PA.

2007
Tahirah R. Jones BI’07, MT’08 received her MS degree in medical technology from Thomas Jefferson University in May 2009. She wrote a meta-analysis of real-time and traditional PCR in identifying Leishmania parasites. Tahirah is currently working at AtlantiCare Regional Medical Center in Atlantic City, NJ.

Lauren E. McCormick PharmD’07 and Jeffrey Garton were married on June 7, 2008, at the Centerton Country Club in Pittsgrove, NJ. Lauren is employed as an anticoagulation clinical pharmacy specialist with Candler Health System in Savannah, GA. She and Jeffrey purchased their first home in April 2009.

1990
Beth (Ginsberg) Ashry P’90 was recently promoted to the position of executive hospital business manager for Bristol-Myers Squibb Company in Palm Beach, FL. She was inducted into the Sales Leadership Society, an elite group of the company’s top sales professionals. She is also a district sales trainer and regional advisory board member.

Michael 1991
Michael Stern BC’91 (MBA’02, LaSalle University) has been promoted to marketing manager at EMD Chemicals Inc. He is now responsible for managing the core component of EMD’s lab chemicals business, including leading a team of three product managers. Michael has been with EMD since 2003.

1992
Therese A. Bohusch MPT’92, DPT’07 took command of the 30th Medical Operations squadron at Vandenberg Air Force Base on July 9, 2009. The squadron of 135 personnel provides comprehensive outpatient prevention and healthcare services to a population of 9,000.

1993
Frank A. DePietro P’93 and his wife Jennifer welcomed daughter Danielle on June 14, 2008. Frank owns The Medicine Shoppe in Moscow, PA, and Jennifer is an occupational therapist for John Heinz/Allied Services in Wilkes-Barre, PA.

1994
Jennifer (Butz) Hopple P’94 purchased Park Avenue Pharmacy in Chambersburg, PA on February 15, 2007. Jenny first started working in the pharmacy, formerly owned by Thomas F. Stonesifer P’59, when she was 16 years old.

1995
Dina (Bainbridge) Sandri P’95 and her husband Marc announced the birth of daughter Kylla Grace on April 10, 2009. Kylla joins big brother Casen (6). Dina is codirector of pharmacy services at Shamokin Area Community Hospital in Coal Township, PA.

1996
Teresa (Evan) Corbo P’96, PharmD’97 was named fellow of the American Society of Health- System Pharmacists. The fellow designation is intended to recognize excellence in pharmacy practice and to promote public awareness of pharmacists who have distinguished themselves in their professional careers. Terri is director of clinical pharmacy services and medication safety officer for Christiana Care Health System in Newark, DE. She resides in West Chester, PA, with her husband and daughters.

Condillo A. Skirlis P’96 celebrated the 10-year anniversary of the opening of her pharmacy in June 2009. Skirlis currently lives in Greece.

1997
Jennifer (Deibler) Kelly P’97 is a pharmacist at CVS in Souderton, PA. She lives in Harleysville, PA, with her husband and three young children.

1998
Matthew W. Grim P’98 and his wife Claudia welcomed the birth of son William Matthew on April 14, 2009. The family lives in Lancaster, PA.

Scott R. Keen MPT’98 was recently promoted to CEO of HealthSouth Rehabilitation Hospital of Western Massachusetts. He and his family moved to Massachusetts from Pennsylvania, where he was the director of marketing and business development for HealthSouth Reading Rehabilitation Hospital.

Amy L. Phillips P’98 and David E. Vincenti were married on October 25, 2008, in Laflin, PA. Wedding guests included Theresa (Martin) Plog P’97, PharmD’98 and Donald R. Klaproth P’98. Amy is a pharmacist with Rite Aid, and Dave is a machinist.

1999
Nancy (Cassarella) Fritch MPT’99 and her husband Rob welcomed son Nathan William on January 15, 2009. Milissa (Fritch) Havard MPT’93 is the proud aunt. Nancy is a physical therapist in an outpatient facility in Havertown, PA, where she and her family reside.

Olivia Gregory R. Kratz and Nicole (Louvros) Kratz, both P’99, welcomed the birth of their first child Olivia Josephine on February 15, 2008. Gregory is a pharmacy director at Coram Pharmacy in Malvern, PA, and Nicole is a staff pharmacist at CVS in West Chester, PA. (see right)

Dino C. Messina P’99 was married in May 2007. He and his wife Kelly welcomed daughter Devyn Elizabeth on March 23, 2008. Dino works for Target as a pharmacist. He and his family reside in Williamstown, NJ.

Brian C. Stapinski MPT’99 (MD’05, Penn State University) and his wife Melissa announced the birth of their daughter Maggie Lynn on June 6, 2008. Maggie was also welcomed by grandparents John A. Stapinski and Marie (Mobilio) Stapinski, both P’68, and aunts Michelle (Stapinski) Pokrinchak PharmD’98 and Caryn Ann Stapinski PharmD’02.

Diane (McWhorter) Valentin MT’99 is currently pursuing a certificate in molecular diagnostics at Michigan State University.

Jason Danielle (Iobbi) Ziernicki P’99, PharmD’00 and her husband Jason welcomed son Jason Jude on January 2, 2009. Danielle is a director in regulatory affairs at Johnson & Johnson, and Jason runs his own marketing firm. The family lives in New Hope, PA. (see left)

Daniel P. Connelly 1982
Daniel P. Connelly P’82 has become a geology researcher, looking for the origins of the Precambrian/ Cambrian boundary and its relationship to life on Earth.

Michael D. Lefkowitz 1983
Michael D. Lefkowitz P’83 released Where’s the Exit, an easy-to-read guide to selling a business, in July 2009. Michael is a founder and managing partner of the Benjamin Ross Group.

Stacy M. Rosemarin P’83 is a pharmacist at both the VA Medical Center and the VA Community Living Center in Philadelphia. She was also recently appointed to the board of directors of Mazzoni Center, the nonprofit LGBT health center in Philadelphia.

1984
Philip L. Sheridan TX’84 (PhD, University of Colorado) married Negin Iranfar on August 10, 2008. They live in San Diego, CA.

Michael S. Wolfe C’84 (MS’86, PhD’90, University of Kansas) is the 2009 recipient of the MetLife Foundation Award for Medical Research and the Potamkin Prize from the American Academy of Neurology, both for his research contributions to the understanding of Alzheimer’s disease.

1985
Diane M. Pascu P’85 (MBA’89, Drexel University) recently became board certified in the area of pharmacotherapy by passing the Board of Pharmaceutical Specialties pharmacotherapy examination. Diane is a clinical pharmacist at Virtua Health, a multi-hospital healthcare system headquartered in Marlton, NJ. She lives in Woodbury, NJ, with her husband Bob Pauro and their four children Trish (18), Rob (16), Bridget (13), and Gina (6).

1986
David B. Crothers TX’86 and Kristine Foranoce were married on April 26, 2009, in Orefield, PA. Jeffrey W. Lawrence TX’87 (PhD’92, University of FL) was a groomsman. Dave and Kris live in Henderson, NV.

Charles A. Peloquin PharmD’86 is now a professor at the University of Florida College of Pharmacy. He is also a pharmacokineticist at the university’s Emerging Pathogens Institute.

1988
Jennifer R. Hubbard TX’88 (MS’00, Drexel University) is the author of The Secret Year, a young adult novel that will be published in January 2010. She lives in Wyncote, PA.

Bryan P. Murray P’88 received his PharmD degree from the University in May 2009. He resides in Hummelstown, PA.

1989
Stephanie K. Bean MPT’89 has been elected commodore of the Philadelphia Yacht Club. She currently serves as vice president of the USP Alumni Association and is pursuing her DPT degree at Temple University.

Lisa R. Flaherty P’89 (PharmD’02, Shenandoah University) is a pharmacy manager at Rite Aid in Wilmington, DE. She lives in Bear, DE, with her daughters Emily (5) and Samantha (4).

Jo-Ellen (Boris) McLaughlin P’89 and James J. McLaughlin, Jr., P’86 welcomed seventh son Sean Andrew on March 26, 2009. He joins big brothers Christopher, Jonathan, Colin, Timothy, Brendan, and Ryan. Jim is a pharmacy manager at Rite Aid, and Jo-Ellen works part-time at The Medicine Center. The family lives in Thornton, PA.
