Timothy Bowers BS’02, MHP ‘08, remembers when he learned he would become a W. W. Smith Scholar.
When he got the news, the medical technology major was preparing for his senior year, which would take the form of a clerkship in Jacksonville, Fla. “Getting that scholarship helped me focus full-time on the clerkship, not financial aid,” Bowers recalled. “It came at a critical time.”
Bowers is just one of hundreds of students at the University who has benefited from the generosity of the W. W. Smith Charitable Trust. This school year marks the 30th year that the trust has funded scholarships at the University.
In those three decades, the W. W.
Smith Charitable Trust, based in West
Conshohocken, Pa., has made grants to
the University totaling more than $1.5
million. These grants have funded two
programs: the Smith Scholars Program,
which supports the scholarships, and the
W. W. Smith Scholarship Prize Program,
which honors selected Smith Schola
Fifteen University students have received W. W. Smith Scholarships this year, thanks to the trust’s most recent $30,000 grant. Scholarships are awarded to full-time undergraduate students from the Delaware Valley who are in good academic standing and demonstrate financial need.
Today, Bowers remains grateful for his W. W. Smith scholarship, which laid the groundwork for his career success and his continued involvement with his alma mater. Since his graduation, Bowers has returned to the University to earn his master’s degree in health policy and serve on the board of directors of the Alumni Association. He works as an infection control practitioner at Penn Presbyterian Medical Center.
“Scholarships make such a difference for so many of our students,” explained Ann V. Satterhwaite, vice president for institutional advancement. “We are so grateful to the W. W. Smith Charitable Trust for their incredible history of funding scholarships at the University. So many student success stories have been made possible thanks to their legacy of support.”
